The School
- The first year at Bedford (for 13 to 14 year olds) is called the Fourth Form and is equivalent to Year 9 in the state system. After that is the Remove and the Fifth Form. The next two years are the Lower Sixth and the Upper Sixth. Bedford School also caters for the lower years (from year 3 to year 8) in Bedford Prep School. This is on the same campus as the main school and many facilities are shared.
- Bedford School offers boys the choice of studying A levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma during the Sixth Form.
- According to the Good Schools Guide Bedford School is "much-respected by those in the know" and "something of a well-kept secret."
Admission
- Candidates applying to the Upper School are required to sit "The Bedford Test" which will provide the School with information on a student’s underlying ability and potential. It is not a test of knowledge but is designed to identify a student’s intelligence, processing capacity and working memory. The test is taken online at the School.
- The School also has additional tests to examine candidates' foundational knowledge in the key subject areas of Mathematics and English.
- Boys are not examined for entry into the Sixth Form, but once a registration has been received, the School will take up a reference with current school, and will consider his application along with his predicted grades at GCSE.
Boarding Houses
- Bedford School has 6 houses. Each house consists of a day house and a partnering boarding house. The house names, originating from the mid nineteenth century, refer to areas of Bedford; boys were originally allocated a house based on the area of town in which they lived. Whilst these are the offi cial house names, it is common for boarders to refer to their house by the name of their boarding house.
- International students come from over 23 different countries, including Spain, France, Poland, Germany, Russia and Hong Kong.
- The boarding houses are designed in the Senior School to involve boys of all ages living together and staff are committed to promoting the highest level of student welfare in a warm and friendly environment.
